Analysis:

In "Miss Brill" by Katherine Mansfield, the author utilizes personification and nostalgic cacophonic language to exert a feeling of loneliness coming from Miss Brill. As the story begins, the author automatically begins to use personification to demonstrate the loneliness of Miss Brill's character. Miss Brill, excitedly reflecting her clothing choice of a fur coat, describes her reunion with with the coat as having "rubbed the life back into the dim little eyes." Miss Brill has given the coat facial features, revealing her lonesomeness. Additionally, by the end of the story, she gives the coat emotionally feelings as she depicts the coat as "crying." Moreover, the cacophonic word "crying" contains a stuttering "c" sound, emitting a feeling of solitude. To conclude, Katherine Mansfield portrays Miss Brill as a lonely character by utilizing personification and cacophonic language in "Miss Brill."

Comparing "Miss Brill" to Another Story:

While reading "Miss Brill," the story reminding us of Boo Radley from To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Boo Radley, a feared recluse, is an extremely lonely character that Miss Brill certainly identifies with. Although Miss Brill is not feared as Boo Radley was, she is similar to him because she watches everyone rather than being watched. In addition, she is not well thought of throughout the community. In To Kill A Mockingbird, Boo Radley was thought of as strange. Similarly, at the end of "Mill Brill," we learned that people also think strangely of Miss Brill.

    1. Once her eyes have been opened about her identity, Mrs. Brill sees what a lonely little creature she must appear to others--which she actually is. She no longer finds joy in the simple pleasure, and she cries as she returns her fur into its box--and re-enters the sad, lonely confines of her "closet." The fur symbolizes Ms. Brill's inner view of herself. It is fragile, hidden away, untouched, and unique. It is also different, and a bit unapproachable.

    2. As she sits in the park and enjoys her Sunday afternoon, she is made to believe that she is playing a part in a play. This part is more of a dream...sort of designed to make her feel important in her life that isn't making her feel significant at all. In the end, Mrs. Brill realizes her loneliness and her belief that she was an "actor" and not just part of the "audience". She suddenly realizes that life is nothing more than a place to be judged and viewed differently.

    3. When the careless couple stupidly allows Mrs. Brill to overhear their criticisms of her, she is shattered and driven into a distracted trance. She has been brought face to face with her own insignificance, what she has originally been trying to escape through fantasy, and she can't handle it.

    4. The woman in the ermine toque, who Miss Brill looks down upon saying that she bought her hat when, "her hair was yellow" and that her hat was "shabby." This symbolizes how people think when they see Miss Brill. The woman in the ermine toque is a shadow for Miss Brill. The woman is delighted to see the well dressed man, just as Miss Brill is happy to see the young couple, which both of course, turn out to be dissapointments.

    1. As Katherine Mansfield depicts Miss Brill as a lonely character, she applies personification to the coat to provide a sense of loneliness coming from Miss Brill. Additionally, as she is quite lonely, she personifies object of clothing, in this case, the coat, by conversing with it. Miss Brill describes the coat as "crying" as if it is upset that it is parting with her.

    2. I think that Miss Brill is a extremely lonely character. Throughout the story, Miss Brill speaks about surrounding characters in a condescending tone, which possibly contributed to her loneliness. Additionally, in my opinion, it seems like Miss Brill has always enjoyed being the audience rather than the actress on stage. She does compare life to a play, and I think she enjoys watching the play rather than being in it.

    3. When she hears the others speaking badly about her, she sort of realizes that she is not needed. Moreover, I think that when she hears them speak about her, it makes her feel a lot lonelier, which is why she personifies clothing.

    4. I don't think people really react very much to Miss Brill. Again, she is the audience and the people she watches are the play. She reacts to them, watches them, and listens to them; however, they do not do the same. I think that the people in the story are more consumed and concerned with their lives than Miss Brill.

  5. Savannah:

    1. I think the coat is there to personify the sense of loneliness that Miss Brill is feeling. When the coat is put away, the act of crying personifies the coat and represents the loneliness of Miss Brill in the world.

    2. I think that Miss Brill is a very lonely character, who is very pessimistic. She looks at the glass half empty rather than half full, and this kind of thinking would make anyone (not just Miss Brill) sad and cynical.

    3. Miss Brill has a completely normal reaction to people talking about her, she finds it offensive, but i think that the people dont really mean to hurt her. The way she is aware of what people are saying seems to dig her lonely hole deeper and make it lonelier.

    4. They just see her as that odd person in the grocery store that they make a side comment about, they do not truely mean to hurt her. However, Miss Brill is a very perceptive person and she reads into almost everything and this kind of digs her a hole.
