Questions:

1. Why do you think Emily never married?

2. How do you think the town views Emily?

3. Why do you think Emily poisoned Homer?

4. Why do you think Emily refused to believe her father was dead?

Analysis:

In "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner, the author utilizes Gothic cacophonic diction to potray Emily as a lonely recluse. When the story begins, Faulkner automatically begins to apply cacophony when he describes Emily's home as "coquettish." The whispering "sh" sound and the stumbling "q" sound emitt a feeling of abandonment from her home and her character. Although her father did not abandon her, she was left alone after his death. Moreover, many men were rejected by her father throughout the years, leaving her alone. In addition, Faulkner illustrates Emily as "spare," a cacophonic word due to the pessimistic "p" sound that illustrates her vulnerability and loneliness. In conclusion, in "A Rose for Emily," William Faulkner applies Gothic cacophonic diction to illustrate Emily as a lonely recluse.

Comparing this story to another:

In "A Rose for Emily," Emily is very similar to Boo Radley from To Kill A Mockingbird. Like Boo Radley, Emily is a recluse that is talked about in her town. She is not feared as Boo Radley was; however, she is certainly talked about and a very curious character. Additionally, people are very curious about Emily which compares to the curiousity surrounding Boo Radley.

    1. I think Emily never married because her father never thought any man was worthy of her. In the story, it is implied that Emily's family always thought very highly of themselves, so I think her father never found anyone he thought was good enough to marry her. Also, Emily is a rather strange character, so people might not have wanted to marry her as she is depicted as a recluse throughout her town. Additionally, she was going to marry someone, but when her father died, he left her. I think she kind of drives people away when tragedies occur in her life.

    2. I think the town tolerates Emily. She is known throughout her town, and I think people do think she is quite strange; however, the people in her town mostly let her be and try their best not to bother her. When her house began to smell bad and people were complaining, the authoritative figures tried to fix it overnight as to not hurt her feelings. Moreover, I think people really pity her.

    3. I think Emily had feelings for Homer, and he did not have the same feelings in return. She wanted to stay with him, so to her the only way for her to do so was to poison him and lock him inside her house. Also, I think she's essentially a very lonely person, and she just wanted someone to stay with her at all times.

    4. I think her father was the only person left to really keep her company, and if he died she would be completely alone. I don't think Emily wants to be alone, and when her father died it was the firs time when she truly felt lonely.

    1. I think that Emily's Family's opinion of her bled into her and she thought that no man was worth her.

    2. I think that the town views her as the quiet lady on the corner who no one really wants to bother.

    3. Emily was a very lonely woman and i think her loneliness led her to do things normal people would do. I think her overall train of thought was "if you dont love me i'll make you"

    4. When someone really close to you dies its hard to accept that their gone. Emily lost her DAD. That in and of itself is something hard to face. I think that she was thinking that if she accepted that he was gone that would mean he actually was. He may have been the one of the only people who actually knew her for who she was.

    1. Socially, Emily wasn’t meant for anybody. The Griersons and her father played a part in this, yet people didn’t feel she was "socially acceptable", for lack of a better word.

    2. Emily is treated differently than many other people in the town may have been treated just because of who she is and who her father was.  They put up with her eccentricities because they know about the insane past of her family.

    3. I believe that Emily poisoned Homer because she was lonely, and he was going to be leaving town. She wanted him to always be with her. This also makes me wonder why she thought it was acceptable morally, humanly, and socially to kill someone if you want them to stay.

    4. Emily refuses to be lonely (points to the death of Homer). She lost someone (maybe the only one) who understood her for who she was. When she lost someone that dear to her, it was hard for her to accept or believe.
