Three Questions:

1. At the beginning of the story, Rainsford is disturbed by General Zaroff's idea of hunting humans; however, by the end of the story, Rainsford becomes similar to General Zaroff as he too hunts humans. How does his character develop and become more similar to General Zaroff?

2. Does Rainsford become a lesser human than General Zaroff was to begin with?

3. How does the author, Richard Connell, incorperate diction, especially cacophony, in the story?

4. Can you compare this story to another story, book, or movie you have seen?

Analysis of Style/Language:
Throughout the story, Richard Connell utilizes situational irony and a wide variety of harsh diction. When the story begins, Rainsford is not aware of the practice of hunting humans as he has only hunted animals. As General Zaroff explains to him that he hunts humans rather than animals, Rainsford is primarily disgusted. When General Zaroff first tells him of hunting humans Rainsford begins to exhibit shock as he applies the cacophonic word "grisly" to describe his feelings. The "g" sound and the buzzing "s" sound portray Rainsford's disgusted view on hunting humans. Furthermore, as the story continues, Rainsford begins to accept the idea of hunting humans after he has killed General Zaroff. General Zaroff, planning to hunt and kill Rainsford, is killed by Rainsford towards the end of the story. Situational irony is carefully applied during the climax, as Rainsford, the hunted, eventually becomes the hunter. Additionally, Rainsford becomes characteristically similar to General Zaroff as he, too, begins to accept hunting humans. Moreover, directly prior to killing General Zaroff, Rainsford's voice is described as "hoarse," a cacophonic word due to the harsh sounding "h." To conclude, Richard Connell applies situational irony and a wide variety of harsh diction to convey Rainsford's transition from the hunted to the hunter.

Comparing this story to another:

This story is very similar to The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. In the beginning of the story, Katniss hunts animals; however, as the story progresses, she must begin to hunt humans. Like Rainsford, she was a hunter of animals. Additionally, she is both the hunter and the hunted, as she must kill others and prevent herself from being killed.

    1) Rainsford starts off being the hunted buy by the end he is the hunter. Being hunted changes people, so it is possible that it was a type of defense method, but instead of snapping out of the survival mode he gets stuck.
    2) Again, Rainsford gets stuck in survival mode whilst general Zaroff seems to do this "hunting" for fun. so, no even though it is not right to kill humans it seemed to be out of survival as opposed to killing for the thrill.
    3) The beginning of this story has a very mysterious feel, and Connell uses words such as "moist black velvet" to describe the night and water. Connell doesn't over use cocauphony and euphony but uses them appropriately due each situation.

    1. he at first at morals and thought that what was going on was terrible but then he goes against everything he believes in a kills a human.
    2. yes because he kills a person too so now hes on the same level as him
    3. By using harsh sounds, he means to show the true unpleasantness of the situation.

    1. I think when the story begins, he is disturbed at the idea of killing humans. When he does kill General Zaroff, I think it was more self-defense than actually intentionally killing someone; however, as he does kill one person, he becomes similar to General Zaroff in a sense that he is now capable of killing someone. In the beginning of the story, I don't think that Rainsford could have killed someone; however, as he was in danger when General Zaroff wanted to kill him, he was required to protect himself. Also, I think that he killed him more to survive than for pleasure.

    2. I don't think that Rainsford becomes a lesser human than General Zaroff. General Zaroff is insane, and I don't think that Rainsford is even close to becoming as crazy as General Zaroff was. Additionally, I really do believe that Rainsford killed out of self-defense rather than for pleasure.

    3. I think that Richard Connel incorperates cacaphony perfectly as the story is very disturbing. The use of cacophony really gives the reader a disturbing view to the story. The author uses the word "crush," containing a harsh sound due to the cackling "c."

    4. This story reminds me of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Katniss, like Rainsford, is the hunter and the hunted. Katniss has to kill others to save herself, which Rainsford must also do.
